Come in winter if you can't resist a skiing holiday – the slopes here are seriously good! When to go 

Not sure what to do in Lorraine? The good news is, you can visit at any time of year and you'll find something. Naturally, the ski resorts are at their best in winter, so if hitting the slopes is at the top of your list, book your holiday then. If you prefer hiking, late spring and early summer are the best times to visit. 

 

Things to do 

  • Place Stanislas is the highlight of the regional capital, Nancy. This enormous square is a local landmark. Go in the evening to get some great photos with the buildings lit up behind you. 
  • Saint-Étienne Cathedral in Metz has the largest expanse of stained glass in the world. Visit this spectacular building to see a collection of stained glass made by different artists over the centuries. 
  • Lac de Gérardmer is the biggest lake in the region. In summer, go kayaking or swimming in the refreshing waters. In winter, check out how it freezes over - a truly stunning sight! 
  • The Forest of Argonne is one of the best spots for hiking in the area. History buffs will want to check out the sights of battles that took place here, but nature lovers can just relax and admire the giant trees. 
  • Visit the hot springs in Vittel for a chance to truly relax. It's the ideal spot to recharge your batteries if you're feeling exhausted. 
  • The Underground Citadel of Verdun is the best spot for history lovers. This underground military post was dug in the 19th century and later played a major role in both World Wars. A short train journey will guide you through the history of one of the most intriguing Lorraine attractions. 
  • The Fortifications de Vauban de Longwy are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These fortresses were essential in the wars of the 17th century, and are still remarkably well-preserved today. 
  • The Bar-le-Duc Renaissance Festival takes place each July and is a highlight of the local character. Costumed performers put on a show in the streets, taking you on a journey back in time. 
  • Walygator amusement park mustn't be missed if you're travelling with kids! Wild rollercoasters, intense thrill rides and gentle, family-friendly attractions ensure that everyone will be kept happy. 
  • In winter, you'll find 12 ski resorts to keep you busy. There are slopes suitable for all levels of experience, from beginners to experts. 

 

Food and drinks 

Quiche Lorraine has become world-famous and other French favourites, such as madeleines and macarons, originate here. The region is also well-known for its charcuterie platters, with a rich assortment of delicious cured meats. These have a lot in common with the cuisine of neighbouring Germany. The local wines are also a real treat. 

  • La Maison dans de Parc is renowned as one of the most famous restaurants in Nancy. The spectacular menu here is worth making a special detour for. 
  • L'Imaginarium in Metz has a wide range of meat, fish, and cheeses. These traditional dishes will leave you feeling totally satisfied.
