Working for others was Laura and Florent’s path for several years after graduating from hotel management school. They gained experience in 4 and 5 star establishments, moving from one season to the next. “At some point, we decided it was time to have our own little inn,” they explain. The couple found their “home” in 2023 in Riom-ès-Montagnes, in the northern Cantal region, right in the heart of the Auvergne Volcanoes Natural Park. The setting is stunning, peaceful, and the single-story establishment is human-sized. With a capacity to host around thirty guests, the hotel's restaurant offers traditional, simple, and local cuisine. Its specialties? For starters, the pounti, "homemade," as Laurent proudly points out. And for the main course: the iconic saucisse aligot! The restaurant is open only on weekdays and in the evenings.

The main attraction of Riom-ès-Montagnes will take you on a journey along one of France's most scenic mountain railway lines. Its century-old charm will lead you to the wild highlands of the Cézallier plateau (1,061 m), the favored land of the great yellow gentian. This 2 hour 50 minute round trip offers stunning views of summer pastures with the iconic Salers cows grazing, panoramas of the Sancy and Cantal mountain ranges, crossings of three viaducts, two tunnels, and stops at quaint, old fashioned train stations.
Named after a local Apéritif drink, the Espace Avèze is also known as the House of Gentian. Indeed, the local elixir is made from yellow gentian, which grows exclusively in the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Natural Park. While the drink should be consumed in moderation, the knowledge about the plant is best taken in large sips: it grows wild at altitudes between 900 and 1,700 meters, flowers in June and July from its 10th year, and can live up to 50 60 years!
